Emergency Lighting
Safety lighting in the event of emergency
The standards for emergency lighting are demanding and the risk of non-compliance is always increasing.
Emergency lighting is generally called upon during an emergency situation such as when the main power supply fails which can often be caused by a fire.
Emergency lighting provides illumination of a sufficiently high level to enable persons of all ages and abilities to evacuate the affected building safely.
It's essential therefore that your emergency lighting systems are tested thoroughly and regularly.
So ask yourself the following questions:
- Are your Emergency Lighting systems tested to the required standards?
- Who tests them?
- Where are the records, can you prove you have carried out your 'duty of care'?
- Who is responsible for the building's safety and can they be sure that, in the event of an emergency, the lighting system will work?
BFP's Emergency Lighting systems will suit all general emergency lighting requirements or they can be tailored to more specific requirements if required.
Emergency Lighting: What does the law say?
BS 5266-10:2008 includes specific guidance on:
- Factors that need to be considered in the design and provision of emergency lighting systems to meet identified hazards
- Actions that a building's occupants have a responsibility to perform in the event of a normal lighting supply failure.
Periodic checks are highly recommended as follows:
- Daily: Check the luminaire is charging
- Monthly: Operational checks
- 6 monthly: 1hr. duration check
- 3 yearly: Full duration check
- Year 4 onwards: Full duration check.
Always keep documented records.
